not my boyfriend

sam/sebastian (stardew valley) | read it on ao3 sam and sebastian had a rehearsed response to being called boyfriends, then everything changed when the fire nation attacked. wc: 1.3k

at seven, sebastian spent more time with sam than with his own family. they were menaces in town, two peas in the pod. they played pranks on adults, got caught a lot, and giggled when they would manage to run away. the two of them had hiding places all over the town, behind fences with chipped paint, behind flowering bushes, hiding around the corner from pierre’s general store. some of the other kids would tease them for spending so much time together, telling sam go play with your boyfriend when he would bother them with his skateboard tricks. he’s not my boyfriend, both of them would angrily shout. but then they’d turn around and run together to the beach and play in the sand or try to fish out joja cola cans out of the river. only when jodi would come out the front door with the phone pressed against her ear and an exasperated robin on the other end of the line would sebastian make his way home, scuffing his shoes on the path up the mountains.

when they turned fifteen, sebastian comforted sam during long nights when his mother cried into the pillow. with a round belly, carrying his baby brother, she was waving at her husband as he left their home to fight in the war. once vincent was born, so soon after kent left, jodi cried a little less. sleep-deprived  and busy with the baby, she depended on her teenage son to help her around the house. he got a job, a stupid part-time gig at joja mart to help out his mother, and in the evenings he would lie exhausted in the grass with sebastian, watching the smoke rings billow from his friend’s mouth, so perfectly shaped as they left his soft lips. sam found himself dipping into daydreams more and more often, watching his best friend’s lips form a perfect little o as he showed off with the trick he picked up from some of the older kids. sometimes he wondered about what it would be like to be cool like seb, what it would be like to cause the grown-ups to furrow their brows with every word coming out of his mouth. sam was a good son, a caring brother taking care of the baby when his mother had to take a few minutes for herself, he rarely caused problems. getting a new skateboard for his birthday only slightly changed that. now he felt closer to sebastian, causing mayor lewis to roll his eyes and curse creatively every time he’d hear sam’s brand new toy landing on the stony path. he even tried teaching sebastian some tricks, but the best the dark haired boy could do was cruise a little, until the street came to a bend and he would stop in panic. sam laughed every time, amused by his gasps and widened eyes. why don’t you teach your boyfriend properly, some of the other kids said. he’s not my boyfriend, sam and sebastian retorted in unison, snickering as they tried to jinx each other, repeating you owe me a joja cola over and over until they could no longer form sentences from laughter.

soon they were seventeen, hiding in sebastian’s bedroom trying to sneak a peek at some questionable magazines they’d found in pierre’s stash when abby had wanted to pull a prank on her dad. they couldn’t for the life of them look at the pages with a straight face. there were so many curves, so much skin, and their cheeks soon got red, their breaths short, and their voices strained. okay that’s enough, sebastian put them away after a few short glances, and they spent the rest of the night trying to ignore each other’s eyes. sam couldn’t stop thinking about the blush on sebastian’s face, and sebastian’s thoughts lingered on sam’s throat bobbing when he turned the page. the night went by slowly, the small tv in the basement crackled with static as scared teenagers on the screen got chased by a person in a badly sewn monster mask, and once robin’s voice echoed down the stairs into the basement, sam turned to grab his jacket from behind them and– collided with sebastian’s lips. it took them a little longer than a moment to realize what was happening, and there was no going back. sam stuttered a hasty apology and scrambled off the floor only to trip as he was making his way up the stairs, blushing all the way to his house. the next day sebastian sat on the step in front of sam’s house, smoking while the blond boy made sure his brother was fed. jodi walked past sebastian as she entered the house, ruffling his dark hair much to the boy’s displeasure, and announced to sam that she was back. your boyfriend is waiting for you, she giggled. he’s not my boyfriend, both of them replied, instantly smiling through the newfound awkwardness as sam pushed past his mother, earning a head pat while he tied his shoes and ran out the door to keep terrorizing mayor lewis with his best friend.

at nineteen they were still hanging out on a daily basis, sneaking sebastian through sam’s bedroom window, creeping on their tip-toes down the stairs into sebastian’s basement, smoking, skinny dipping, racing cars on sebastian’s motorbike, howling into the night as their youth kept them alive and thriving. with dark circles under his eyes, sam would take his brother to the beach and power through his shifts at joja mart. sebastian would work on his computer, avoid anyone who could ruin his good moods, and meet up with sam every night, finding new ways to keep themselves entertained. at night they had band practice, abigail would leave them with a cheeky have fun, boyfriends , to which they already had an almost rehearsed response of he’s not my boyfriend. by now, nobody in the town believed it. nobody apart from them. not my boyfriend, sebastian thought as his hand carded through sam’s pale blond hair, bringing his face closer to taste the cheesy pizza on his lips. not my boyfriend, sam repeated in his head as he pulled sebastian closer against his body while they entangled on sam’s bed. not my boyfriend, their mantra was losing all meaning while angry music blasted from the speakers and they got lost in each other.

at twenty-two years of age, sam and sebastian stopped correcting people. months had passed since they last said he’s not my boyfriend, now opting for a kiss on the corner of the other’s lips instead. they visited jodi often, bringing vincent gifts from the city and going on walks with kent, who shed a proud tear when he saw his son so grown up and so damn happy. robin had remodeled sebastian’s bedroom, making it into a guest room for when the boys would visit. a wide smile never left her face when they’d knock on the door of her shop with bags in their hands as maru pushed past her to run into their arms first. even demetrius became more comfortable being around sebastian now that they didn’t live together. in the evenings the boys would go to the saloon and play pool to honor the old days, making abby roll her eyes when they’d spend more time flirting than playing. she pretended to be annoyed a lot, but she had been their biggest fan, leaving their hangouts early to hopefully give them chance upon chance to make a move before they thought they could. in their twenties, though, sam and sebastian took every moment they could spare between band practices and their day jobs to enjoy each other, share kisses and gentle touches, make the loveliest melodies, and fall asleep in each other’s arms. in their twenties, they could once again say he’s not my boyfriend, smiling as they put mermaid pendants around one another’s necks.
